Dental aesthetics
In the past and much more so in the present, aesthetic appearance has been a preoccupation of we humans, even up to the point of becoming in lots of cases an absolute necessity. Odontologists also care about this. At Hola Chelo we provide a wide range of treatments for our patients ; the only objective being to give them a lovely smile.
Basically these aesthetic treatments can be classified as the following:
- 1. Hygiene treatment and prophylaxis
- 2. Treatments using micro abrasion techniques on enamel.
- 3. Aesthetic shaping.
- 4. Treatments using whitening techniques.
- 5. Restorative treatments.
a) With compound resins.
b) With dental porcelain. - 6. Orthodontic or orthognatic treatments.
- 7. Periodontal treatments.
Teeth whitening
Teeth whitening is an odontology treatment, it is not merely aesthetic and cannot be carried out wherever. That is to say that it is a treatment which changes the colour of the teeth making them lighter, but it should only be carried out by a trained dentist who would be the one to decide what should be done taking the patient’s health into account. The odontologist would select the technique to use and an examination of the patient has to take place first.
Normally, it is not painful and it is a myth that it can damage the tooth enamel. If the whitening is carried out correctly following the dentist’s instruction, using a safe product, properly controlled, sold by a reliable company, it is not dangerous - that is to say, it cannot damage the tooth enamel.
It is ideal to combine two methods to achieve a whiter, brighter smile: whitening at home and whitening at the surgery.
Whitening at the surgery is carried out in a session of approximately 30 minutes. Protecting the gums we apply hydrogen peroxide to the teeth which is activated by using a special lamp. We always recommend completing the whitening done at the surgery with whitening at home as this gives better results in the long term.
Whitening at home is carried out by using trays made after measuring the patient’s mouth (thus avoiding any damage to the gum) These are used with a special gel with a base of carbamide peroxide. Along with the product which we use in our clinic, one hour a day for 15-20 minutes (depending on the whitener we select) is sufficient. It is important that before carrying out dental whitening the gums are healthy and there is no decay, as, if not, we run the risk of aggravating the gum problem or producing a pulpitis (inflammation of the nerve) in the decayed teeth. For this reason whitening should always be carried out under dental supervision.
Veneers of porcelain or composite? Differences and treatment
Thanks to dental aesthetics we are able to change the shape and colour of our teeth thus much improving how we look when we smile. Dental veneers are recommended to give our teeth a better appearance, but what type of veneer is the most suitable for each of us and what is the difference between the porcelain and composite ones?
Firstly, there are porcelain veneers. With this type of aesthetic dental veneer we can alter malformations in the teeth, close interdental gaps, correct tooth alignment and even change the colouring of the teeth. The treatment is quick and simple. The material used for this is porcelain which is very resistant, strong and safe and which greatly improves the appearance of our teeth.
Secondly there are composite veneers which allow us to alter the colour and the shape of the tooth. This is the ideal treatment for reconstructing broken, fractured or very decayed teeth. moreover, it has the advantage of being very protective of the tooth enamel as well as strong and secure.
One of the differences between the two types of veneer is their fabrication: composite veneers are applied onto the natural tooth, adding layers of the composite (a special resin) onto the tooth thus giving it shape. Porcelain veneers, however, are produced in a laboratory.
The positioning of the veneers is also different in each case: the composite ones are placed straight over the tooth and are done at the time of the one appointment whereas the porcelain ones need the natural tooth to be shaped beforehand. For this reason impressions have to be taken, the veneers are produced in the laboratory and then they are fitted, which requires more than one appointment.
Porcelain veneers are more long lasting as regards deterioration and they are more resistant to abrasion and change of colour than composite ones. One of the other differences is that although the composite veneers can be reversed, that is to say they can be taken off the tooth leaving it in the same state as before, porcelain ones are a totally permanent treatment as, if they are required to be moved, the tooth beneath will be smaller and more fragile because of the shaping beforehand. This means that porcelain veneers are irreversible and for life, whereas composite ones can be removed.
There is also a price difference between the two veneers as the composite ones are much cheaper. The porcelain ones are usually much more expensive and the price depends on the type of porcelain used.
If you are still wondering which are preferable, porcelain or composite, it is best to visit the dentist as he/she will be able to advise you based on what treatment you need.
Veneers without shaping the tooth
Dental veneers without the need to sculpt the tooth is a minimally invasive technique which solves many aesthetic dental problems and is very popular. This is an aesthetic dental treatment that is reversible and which is not painful, and the tooth remains complete and healthy. The veneers which do not require the tooth to be moulded, are extra fine ceramic layers which are extraordinarily resistant and thin (0.5mm).
The reasons why these are fitted are the following:
- Small teeth
- Short teeth
- Teeth pointing inwards
- Small spaces between teeth
